Michael McDearman

BBQ and Grilling GrillMaster, Author, Competition BBQ Cook and TV Personality

Before FitGriller, Michael was widely recognized as ‘GrillMaster McD.’ He is one of the top GrillMasters in the country and coach of a four-time World Champion Steak Cooking team.  Often featured in the media, cookbooks and television shows, Michael is a teacher who loves spreading the good word on live fire cooking like a great sauce.

The FitGriller concept is actually pretty simple – you don’t have to give up “flavor” in your food or life to practice a healthy lifestyle. With the FitGriller on your team, you get professional guidance, meal planning, training programs, cooking tips and techniques, and access to a variety of spices, seasonings, glazes, and sauces. The program doesn’t stop there, as FitGriller’s “Food for Thought” video segments will help get your mind right with motivational tips for the gym and life in general.

FitGriller employs an 80-20 lifestyle mindset: 80% of your success depends on making solid choices, while the other 20% relies on allowing life to happen but still feeling good about it. In other words, by focusing on making quality decisions with a goal in mind, we can positively impact our results. Even when life hands us lemons, we can feel better with solid decision making. More specifically, a cheat meal is not the end of the world as long as it doesn’t become habit and the appropriate work is put in to offset it.

What People Are Saying:

“Michael has been a recurring guest (and expert resource) for my show for well over 5 years. He is widely considered to be the hardest working man in BBQ and that reputation is well earned. – Greg Rempe, BBQ Central Show

“Honest, dependable, generous and incredibly hard-working. Beyond that, he is an impressive business man who is always on the cutting edge of emerging markets.” – Marcia, BBQ Hooks and More

How It All Began

At an early age, Michael wanted a motorcycle.  His parents told him to earn the money to pay for his own desires so this eager entrepreneur became the youngest paperboy in his hometown.  Why is this important?  It’s the beginning of his “BBQ smoke ring.”

While on his route, Michael found himself consistently slowing down and breathing deeper at one particular house.  Being a curious kid, he approached the neighbor and asked, “Whatcha doin?” The man took the time to share with Michael what he was doing and explained he was a competition BBQ cook.  And so it began.

From his early days of cooking for family to his professional days cooking competitively, FitGriller Michael McDearman is ready to share his experience to help you enjoy your fit lifestyle.

Family Tradition

Michael’s inspiration for cooking grew from his parents and grandparents. Preparing family meals was a tradition in his family, especially during Christmas, and Sunday family kitchen time became a weekly event he looked forward to.

Michael was finishing meals for his parents by the age of 8 and considers his 38 years of pre-internet mentorship under his Grandmother (published multiple times in Southern Living) as the single most important influencer in his cooking career.

School Days

He continued to perfect his skills throughout high school and cooked his own prom dinner instead of dining out like most of his friends. Michael continued cooking in college where he first started to BBQ. The barbeque wouldn’t last for more than fifteen minutes but the friendships last forever!

Event Planning Business

A passion for the art of cooking along with the development of professional business skills led him to open an event planning business. With this business, he built a 97 sq. ft. kitchen from the ground up. He once served 750 people for a Country Music Television gathering.

“You could prepare anything in that kitchen.”

Other Professional Endeavors

Michael went on to design and build custom smokers and grills. During that time, he was approached and asked to work with the American Grillmaster Experience where he traveled the country teaching people how to pick, prepare and grill the perfect steak.

When he is not working on a project, he focuses on his love of teaching. Michael enjoys passing along the tips, tricks and techniques to help everyone become a GrillMaster, whether in their own backyard or on a World Championship competition stage.
